Timely Stroke Treatment May Reduce Permanent Damage

Research has found that people who suffer a stroke have better survival and recovery rates if treated within 90 minutes of the event. Clot-busting medications, taken within 90 minutes of the first stroke symptoms, can decrease the risk of permanent damage. Professor of neurology and director at the Duke Comprehensive Stroke Center in North Carolina, Dr. Larry B. Goldstein said, “there’s good evidence that treatment can be effective up to 4.5 hours after onset…but just because you have that (long) doesn’t mean you should take that long.” A few stroke symptoms are speech difficulty, facial drooping and arm weakness.
