Weekend Surgeries May Hold Greater Risk

A recent study found that surgeries being conducted on Saturdays and Sundays may carry more risk than those being performed during the week. The study analyzed 7,112 surgeries being performed for individuals suffering from ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Ulcerative colitis surgeries being performed on weekends had a 70% higher risk of complications while Crohn’s disease surgeries were not effected from weekend to weekday. The author of the study, Dr. Ashwin N. Ananthakrishnan said, “this doesn’t mean that if you’re admitted on a weekend, you should fight surgery.” More here
