One in Five Americans Have Hearing Loss

According to research from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Surveys, one in five Americans over the age of 12 has hearing loss severe enough to interfere with their ability to communicate. Hearing loss, as defined by the World Health Organization, is not being able to hear sounds 25 decibels or less. Frank R. Lin, MD, PhD, study researcher, said hearing loss is inevitable in many ways and the biggest mistake people make is feeling it is inconsequential. Hearing loss can have a great impact on cognitive abilities and can lead to social isolation and loneliness, according to Lin. More here and here.
