Survey Finds Common Cancer Misconceptions

A survey of 279 patients diagnosed with cancer between September 2007 and January 2010 found participants shared many misconceptions about what causes cancer and how to treat the disease. The research found the group cited pollution, stress, and injury as common causes of cancer but lacked understanding of the role diet and exercise play in the development of the disease. Nearly 30 percent of the surveyed patients believed alternative treatments were as effective as surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy. Study researcher Karen Lord said myths such as the belief that surgery causes cancer to spread or that alternative treatments are as effective as conventional treatments should be challenged, as it is vital that people receiving a cancer diagnosis have accurate information on treatment options.
