Prevention Focused Health Care Reduces Costs, Hospitalizations

As health-care and prescription drug costs have risen, so have the number of hospital admissions and emergency room visits. Now an emerging trend in health care aims to reduce costs and hospital visits by focusing on preventing disease rather than just treating it. According to the Patient Centered Primary Care Collaborative, there are 40,000 primary care doctors working in patient-centered medical homes, which are practices where the doctors track patients between visits, coordinate with specialists and nutritionists, monitor tests, and work more closely with their patients. Dr. Dave Lynch, whose family practice has operated as a medical home since the 1990s, said that patients have to act as their own doctor 99 percent of the time and the current health-care system doesn’t do a good job helping patients be the best doctor they can be.
