Doctors Debate Necessity Of Drinking Eight Glasses Of Water A Day

Drinking enough water is vitally important, and especially so during hot weather, physical activity, and for the elderly. But according to Dr. Margaret McCartney, the commonly quoted advice that people should drink six to eight glasses of water each day is not supported by any scientific evidence. The benefits of drinking extra water are said to include improved skin tone, weight loss, reduction of urinary tract infections, and better concentration but the amount needed depends on a number of factors. Diet, heat, and medical conditions are among the factors that determine how much water an individual should drink. And, though there is still disagreement on the topic, The Mayo Clinic says that people only need as much water as is necessary to replace the water they lose throughout the day. More here and here.
