Home Care Patients At Greater Risk Of Antibiotic Overuse

According to a study published in the Journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, doctors may be over-prescribing antibiotics for patients receiving at-home medical care. The study collected data on more than 125,000 home-care patients and found those with poor life expectancies and those under the age of 65 were most at risk for misuse. Dr. Mark Loeb, one the study’s authors, said the findings suggest physicians may be over-prescribing antibiotics out of cautiousness. According to Loeb, the results reveal tremendous variability in how and why antibiotics are prescribed and illustrates the need for more effective methods of diagnosis that allow for appropriate use. Overuse of antibiotics can weaken their effectiveness and ability to fight against emerging infections. More here.
