Seniors Stay At Home With Help From Technology

The average annual cost of moving an elderly parent into an assisted-living facility or nursing home is between $38,000 and $67,500. But advances in technology, including activity sensors and smart pillboxes, are making it easier to extend the number of years seniors can live independently. Among them, high-tech pillboxes that can be programmed to sound alarms and notify caregivers when medication is being missed and wearable devices that detect falls can alleviate risk and prevent emergencies. Still, finding an effective device that is cost-efficient can be difficult, as the technology is new and, in many cases, not subjected to independent testing or covered by Medicare or private insurance.
